Welcome to the amazing world of dental implants!

Teeth can be replaced in many different ways. An implant is almost always the best option because:

  • It looks and feels very natural.
  • You can chew any food as if it were a natural tooth.
  • It is a long-term solution.
  • You do not have to alter the adjacent teeth.

What Is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are made up of three parts:
  • The implant, which is made of titanium, is easily placed into your jaw bone.
  • The restoration, which fills in the gap in your smile, looks remarkably like your own tooth.
  • The abutment securely connects the implant to the restoration.

Our dentist in Royal Palm Beach, Dr. Anis Elkhechen, DMD has both the skill and the experience to successfully place dental implants right here in our office. After placement, the implant integrates seamlessly with your jaw bone. You won't even know that it is there!

Dr. Elkhechen will help you select the restoration option that’s right for you. For a single missing tooth, a crown is typically the most appropriate solution. If you are missing a few teeth in a row, implants can be used to support a bridge. If you require dentures, implants can be strategically placed to secure your denture and prevent embarrassing and uncomfortable slips and slides.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Dental implants have a number of significant advantages over other tooth replacement options. The biggest advantage is in their design. Other tooth replacements sit above the gumline. The implant is the only tooth replacement that also replaces the missing root.

This matters because your periodontal bone and the roots of your teeth have an important relationship. When you lose a tooth, the bone is no longer stimulated to maintain itself and the relationship comes to an end.

Over time, the periodontal bone resorbs, becoming weaker and less dense. In time, you are likely to lose more teeth and the shape of your face can even change.

An implant, however, restores that relationship, protecting your valuable bone structure.

Implants are also a more permanent solution than bridges or dentures. Unlike bridges, they don’t require us to alter existing healthy teeth. You care for implants much the same way you would your own natural teeth. Brushing and flossing as directed and visiting our dental office for routine cleanings and examinations will help keep your implants in great shape for years to come.

Dental Implant Procedure at Groves Dental Care

The procedure for placing implants is one of the most misunderstood in dentistry because implants are relatively new to patients. One of the most common misconception about dental implants is that they hurt because a piece of titanium is being placed into the jawbone.

Dr. Elkhechen has placed many implants in many patients near Loxahatchee, FL and he usually notices the same thing over and over again.

After providing a patient with a dental implant, Dr. Elkhechen always sees the patient at a one-week post-op appointment to see how they are doing. Patients almost always tell him the same thing – they are pleasantly surprised that the process was much easier than they anticipated!

Most patients say there was hardly any discomfort compared to what they had expected. The most common symptom noticed following implant placement is some soreness in the gums. However, to put it into perspective, many of our patients don’t need to take pain medications following the procedure even if they have some mild gum soreness.

At Groves Dental Care, we understand what you are thinking. How is it possible that there is usually only mild discomfort with an implant procedure?

For starters, Dr. Elkhechen always makes sure you are very numb before starting the procedure. This anesthetic will last for several hours, which bypasses the major inflammatory phase. Secondly, if there is a tooth that is removed because it is not salvageable, we always try to place the implant at the same appointment while you are already numb. If the surrounding bone is solid, then we are basically slipping the implant into the space where the tooth was removed. The bone almost doesn’t realize that the tooth was removed because the implant immediately takes its place.

And with our Itero 3D scanner, you no longer need traditional dental impressions that were necessary to fabricate your restoration.  A simple scan with the Itero wand is taken of the area and digitally sent to the lab.  In a few short weeks, your restoration is ready for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

No, dental implants cannot get cavities. A good natural tooth is always the best type of tooth, but if a tooth is not save-able or has a poor prognosis (small chance of lasting any considerable amount of time) then an implant is the next best alternative. One of the main advantages of an implant is that because it is made out of titanium, it is impossible for it to get cavities.

However, implants are not immune to their own version of gum disease that could cause an implant to fail or be lost. This gum disease that occurs around an implant is called Peri-implantitis. This is typically characterized as an inflammation of the gums surrounding the implant, and can ultimately lead to tissue destruction.

As with all dental concerns, the best way to prevent Peri-implantitis is to keep up with your at-home dental care, and to visit a dentist for regular cleanings and checkups. Contact our office today if you'd like to learn more about the dental implant process, and to see if you are a candidate for this treatment option!
