Have you ever lost a tooth because it broke and it could not be saved? Not having an option to keep a tooth when you really want to can be a frustrating thing. This occurs because, naturally, human beings like to have options or choices.

Damaged teeth can be restored in a variety of ways depending on the extent of the damage. Teeth that are heavily damaged or weak may require crowns to strengthen and protect the teeth.

Every restoration we create is crafted for both durability and esthetics. We recognize how important it is to have a smile that is both comfortable and long-lasting, and we take your needs seriously.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a durable porcelain shell that is bonded to the tooth to provide strength to it.

We utilize dental crowns in Wellington, FL to protect:

  • A tooth with a large filling that is weak and can break at anytime
  • A tooth with a large cavity that, once removed, leaves half or less of the natural tooth structure
  • A tooth with a fracture or multiple fractures present
  • A tooth that is discolored (and a veneer is not a good option)
  • A tooth that requires root canal therapy or has an existing root canal

One of the most important things for you, as the patient, is to realize that many of these issues will not initially cause any pain. When they are left untreated, however, it is just a matter of time before something happens that may lead to pain and the eventual loss of the tooth. Being proactive is the key to minimizing emergency dental problems, keeping your teeth, and keeping your costs down.

Patients often only realize that there is a problem with their teeth if they feel pain, see something unusual, or go to the dentist regularly where someone can let them know they have something that needs to be taken care of. We want to emphasize that damaged teeth don't start hurting until the situation is very bad. Why does this matter? Well, when people have a small problem, like a cavity, it almost never hurts. Small cavities are also the easiest to fix with conservative treatments. When left untreated, though, these cavities continue to grow bigger and bigger, often without ever troubling the patient. Once the cavity reaches a certain size and strikes the nerve of the tooth, a patient may begin to experience pain. At this point, the tooth begins to develop an infection that will eventually cause severe pain if it is left untreated. Unfortunately, once a tooth has an infection, the options for keeping the tooth become very limited.

The important piece to take away here is that patients often don't realize they have a dental problem until they start to feel pain. This often results in a patient experiencing a dental emergency – not because that was their intention, but because teeth rarely hurt when dental problems are small. Regular dental evaluations and cleanings always result in fewer dental emergencies for patients.

A bridge is an appliance made of several crowns in a row, which is used to replace one or more missing teeth. The crowns that fill in for the missing teeth are held in place with crowns attached to the adjacent healthy teeth. Bridges are an affordable option for tooth replacement, particularly if you are not a good candidate for dental implants.

Procedure for Crowns & Bridges at Groves Dental Care

The procedure for a crown is quite simple. Once you are good and numb, Dr. Elkhechen will prepare the tooth to provide a nice stable base for the crown to be bonded on. We will take a scan or impression of the involved tooth and send this information to a high-quality lab where your crown will be fabricated. We will then provide you with a temporary crown.

Once we receive your crown back from the lab, we will set you up with an appointment to deliver it. This usually happens within about two to three weeks.

The process of getting a bridge is similar to that of a crown, but it involves several teeth as opposed to just one.

"So Happy I Met Dr. Anis!"

"Dr. Anis is the best!! I first came to him for a second opinion for my very badly broken molar. The two dentists I saw prior to him told me I would need it extracted because there was no saving it. I just was not okay with that! When I came to Dr. Anis he was very up front with me and told me that he can’t guarantee anything, but that it was possible to put a crown on my broken molar. This sounded way better than an extraction! Now I have had that crown for almost three years! So happy I met Dr. Anis!"

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dental bridges and dental bonding are cosmetic treatments that conceal or correct dental issues in patients who want to improve their smiles. Bridges and bonds—together or separately—can fix speech issues, help contour face shape, give you a great smile, and enhance your ability to chew food

However, there are differences between these two great options.

Dental Bridges

A bridge replaces missing teeth. Bridges also maintain the shape of your face and reduce stress on your bite. A bridge can be attached to surrounding teeth to help keep it in place.

Because bridges rely on existing teeth, it’s important to see your dentist regularly after your bridge placement. Your dentist will help you maintain the health of surrounding teeth.

Dental Bonding

Dental Bonding repairs small chips, hides discoloration, and can enhance the appearance of crooked teeth.  Dental bonding relies on tooth-colored filling that bonds with your tooth or teeth to enhance the appearance.

The white-colored filling, sometimes used to fill cavities, comes in a variety of shades to match your teeth and better conceal cosmetic issues.

Please contact our Loxahatchee, FL office if you would like to learn more about bridges and bonding.
